In the mid-80s Christine and myself would do the Rastrick Pub Run on a weekend. Start at the Sun Inn and visit the several pubs all in turn until settling at the last The Globe on Rastrick Common. We would meet many people to chat with on the way. Many become friends. Some great friends including the two Evans brothers. Martin the elder and Matthew. They like us ended up in the Globe. The friendship grew as they were extremely personable. They were special guests at Christine’s 40th birthday party in May 1991 in the marquee in our garden in Sunnydale Avenue. We followed their various careers. Matthew being artistically gifted after university and worked as a card designer at Hallmark Cards, Bradford. In 2002 he went freelance to become an artist. That same year he married Helen. See his website details below. Facebook came and we became ‘friends’. Christine and I visited the many exhibitions he exhibited at. His dream job had become a living. Well of course last October I invited the Evans family to my 80th birthday party. It was accepted. Unbeknown to myself Matthew contacted Christine and said he would like as a birthday present to paint a picture of my favourite view. It did not take her long to decide what they would be. He has much as Christine was exited with the task as the place was, like mine, we were often taken by our respective parents when growing up. Last Saturday I welcomed friends to my 80th party. One of the first to arrive was Matthew and Helen. He gave me a present all wrapped which I eagerly unwrapped and saw a painting of my favourite view. “Blackpool Tower from the Central Pier” Tears were flowing. I could not thank him enough. How Christine kept that a secret is beyond my belief. Since a child with my parents, I have been taken to the café on the Central Pier and had refreshments sat inside and out looking at, to me, the magical Tower. Over the years again and again with all the special persons in my life. However, short my visit to Blackpool I always find time to visit the Central Pier café. Thank you, Matthew, and Helen, for this most cherished present. Unfortunately, because of illness Martin could not be at the party. All wish him a speedy recovery. Adrian Hartshorn. April 2023.
